AIAI CONGRATULATES RETURNING PROVINCIAL LIBERAL GOVERNMENT

London, ON – The Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI) extends its congratulations to Premier Dalton McGuinty and his Liberal Party on their re-election to a third term at the helm in Ontario government.

“AIAI looks forward to working with the Liberal government in a long list of critical First Nation issues”, stated Grand Chief Denise Stonefish.  Some of these issues were brought to light in the recent provincial election town hall hosted by AIAI.  Topics of discussion included recognition of theUnited Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Health, Jurisdiction, and Consultation.  As was noted by Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Chris Bentley, while much has been done by the liberal government during their leadership in many areas with regard to First Nations, there is still so very much to do in so many different areas.

“We anticipate a continuing working relationship with the liberal government to assist in finding and implementing solutions for our people”, emphasized Grand Chief Denise Stonefish.  It is imperative that this working relationship be based on respect and collaboration.  “We want to ensure that progress is made with respect to the recommendations of the Ipperwash Inquiry.  Issues of Jurisdiction and Consultation are also key areas that AIAI will focus on during this term of office.”

AIAI is mandated as a political territorial organization to defend and enhance the Aboriginal and Treaty rights of its eight member First Nations.  Their website may be visited at www.aiai.on.ca .
