ASSOCIATION OF IROQUOIS AND ALLIED INDIANS ELDERS GATHERING

For Immediate Release:

August 20, 2012

Hiawatha, ON – The Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI) is pleased that Hiawatha First Nation will host the 2012 AIAI Elders Gathering. The annual event will take place on August 21, 22 and 23, and is expected to draw participants from AIAI member Nations as well as other local First Nation communities.

Each year the Elders Gathering brings together First Nation Elders from the Association’s member Nations. The theme for this year’s Elders Gathering is “Restoring Health, Living it Well.”

The elders will participate in various workshops that will include cultural teachings, fitness for elders and fire safety. The “Hiawatha Hoedown,” scheduled for Wednesday evening, is expected to be a highlight, with creative costumes and lots of laughter.

Association Grand Chief Gordon Peters, Deputy Grand Chief Denise Stonefish and Hiawatha’s Chief Sandra Moore will each offer opening comments to the elders on day one of the conference.

The AIAI is mandated as a political territorial organization to defend and enhance the Indigenous and Treaty rights of its eight member First Nations.  Visit them online at www.aiai.on.ca , https://twitter.com/#!/aiai_comms , www.facebook.com/aiai.pto , www.youtube.com/user/AIAIAdmin .
