London, Ontario, May 1st, 2025 – Mark Carney has been elected as Prime Minister and will serve four years in office with a Liberal minority government. The Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians extends its congratulations to the Prime Minister on his election as well as to the candidates who participated in the election.
Grand Chief Joel Abram Says “I applaud Prime Minister Carney and congratulate him for getting re-elected, but I do so with a reminder that there are still some very large issues to contend with when it comes to First Nations Peoples. We will make sure the current government does not let our concerns fall by the wayside and that they will follow through with real action. We are willing to work with the current government, but we refuse to allow our people to be reduced to a matter of convenience for the sake of a political victory. I have given many interviews highlighting concerns and suggested actions, and I hope these words do not wind up as a fading echo in their ears.”
Deputy Grand Chief Stacia Loft says “The well-established priorities of Indigenous Peoples in Canada must be taken seriously, and immediate action is needed to address long standing inequities. Although we are hopeful that Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister will move the yardstick on Indigenous Peoples priorities, it can be frustrating that the Liberal Party’s platform and established policies, in addition to Prime minister Carney’s focus during the election, not appear to speak to or address our needs. Prime Minister Carney has a real opportunity to elevate our priorities and take necessary action. We will ensure that our priorities remain front and centre through collective strategic advocacy efforts.”
The Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians congratulates Prime Minister Carney and the other candidates elected to office in their respective ridings, but now is the time for action – real commitments must be fulfilled, and First Nations voices must be heard and respected.
