ELECTIONS AT AIAI’S ANNUAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR GRAND CHIEF AND DEPUTY GRAND CHIEF THIS YEAR

London, Ontario October 30th, 2020 – Every three years, at the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians Annual General Assembly (AGA), the position of Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief comes up for selection. The AGA will be held virtually this year due to COVID-19 restrictions and will be online from November 3rd to the 5th. This year we honor the work and efforts of Grand Chief Joel Abram and Deputy Grand Chief Gord Peters as their terms end.
We are happy to confirm that Joel Abram will be serving another three year term as Grand Chief through acclamation and will be officially recognized during the AGA. Day two of the AGA will see Michelle Altiman from Delaware First Nation aka Eelünaapéewi Lahkéewiit, and Stacia Loft from the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte running for the position of Deputy Grand Chief. Due to COVID-19 the traditional stand behind selection process that is normally used will be adapted to an online selection process.
The AIAI Annual General Assembly is also an opportunity for the member Nation communities to create priorities for the coming year and discuss solutions to impacting issues. This year’s theme is “A Vision for Asserting our Rights”.

Members of the media are welcome to attend, meet with the candidates and to speak with the Grand Chief. They are encouraged to reach out to AIAI for scheduling and arrangements for an interview. Observers and media can watch the AGA and the day two election by checking the AIAI AGA website when it becomes live on Monday November 1st at http://www.agameeting.ca links for each day of the assembly will be posted on the morning of each day.
